Moreton Island can be yours to enjoy this summer with our Redcliffe accommodation at Proximity Waterfront Apartments. Situated in Redcliffe, just 30-kilometres from Brisbane, our waterfront oasis offers the perfect summer escape, where the beautiful Moreton Island awaits just off the coast.

Moreton Island is famous for being the third largest sand island in the world, with plenty for holidaymakers to discover amongst its 70-square-mile area, including pristine beaches, sand dunes, picturesque lagoons, and tropical bushland. If it’s adventure and exploration you’re after this summer, there’s no better way to find it than at Moreton Island with Proximity Waterfront Apartments.

Discover Moreton Island’s Breathtaking Beaches and Sand Dunes

Reigning as the world’s third largest sand island, Moreton Island is a paradise for those seeking white beaches and sandy plains on their next holiday. The island is made up of mostly sand and bushland, with a number of untouched beaches to discover along its edges.

At Moreton Island’s northernmost tip you’ll find Honeymoon Bay: a scenic horseshoe-shaped beach surrounded in tropical rainforest, with crystal-clear water to savour inside its rocky outcrops. Near Honeymoon Bay is Cape Moreton, which is home to the historic Cape Moreton Lighthouse and a stunning east-facing beachfront amongst hills and rocks.

Moreton Island’s west-facing beaches are also well worth a visit and can be found at Bulwer, Cowan Cowan, and Tangalooma – each with their own unique atmosphere to absorb. And when you find yourself at the island’s southern parts, make sure to visit the beach at Kooringal, which offers fantastic views down to North Stradbroke Island.

The sandy paradise doesn’t stop with Moreton Island’s beaches, as the island is also popular for its ample sandy dunes. ‘The Desert’ is the place to go for mountainous white sand dunes, which offer the perfect location for sand tobogganing as well as quad biking. Also at Harpers Rock near Cape Moreton, you’ll find an impressive cluster of red sand formations, which have to be seen in person.

Take a 4WD Through the Rainforest and Hike the Bushland

As well as sand, Moreton Island is blanketed in scenic rainforest and bushland, and it’s a must for exploring firsthand. There’s plenty of ways to see it all: by foot, by 4WD, or – if you’re feeling daring – by helicopter from above. Whichever way you choose, seeing the island’s tropical scenery is a fantastic experience for all.

Notable hiking locations include Mount Tempest at the centre of the island, which offers a challenging hike with an unforgettable 360-degree view from its 285-metre-tall summit. There are also memorable views to be had at Five Hills Lookout – located between Honeymoon Bay and Bulwer – which can be reached by taking the Five Hills Walking Track.

Swim in Blue Lagoon and Don’t Miss These Incredible Diving Spots

After taking in Moreton Island’s pristine beaches, the next best thing to do is visit the island’s lagoon and many diving spots. Blue Lagoon is a breathtaking natural lake situated south from Cape Morton and offers the perfect location to swim in fresh water, unwind amongst the trees, and tuck into a picnic. It’s also a fun spot to birdwatch, where many species can be seen around the area. Another unmissable swimming spot is the rocky Champagne Pools, which can be found near Honeymoon Bay.

For those looking to dive and snorkel, head to the island’s northernmost point for Flinders Reef. Located off the coast, Flinders Reef has over 175 species of fish, with beautiful coral reefs and turtles to be seen up close – plus the migrating humpback whales during the winter and spring seasons.

As well as Flinders Reef, don’t miss out on seeing the shipwrecks at Tangalooma. The Tangalooma Wrecks offer an unforgettable snorkelling experience just a few metres from the beach, with 15 total vessels to be seen that have lain dormant as far back as the 1960s. If you’re not looking to get wet, there are three beached shipwrecks to see at Bulwer, known famously as the Bulwer Wrecks.
